Background and Objective: Sustainable management of forest ecosystems requires the use of appropriate biological indicators to assess forest ecological conditions. Tree-related microhabitats (TreMs) are among the most important of these indicators because they provide essential habitats for numerous animal, plant, and fungal species and are generally more abundant and diverse in natural forests or forests subject to minimal management interventions. These structures, which develop on living trees or standing deadwood, include water-filled tree holes, woodpecker cavities, insect galleries, and various other specialized structures that are important for the survival, feeding, and reproduction of many species. The aim of this study was to identify, assess, and compare tree-related microhabitats across different developmental stages of relatively undisturbed beech stands in the reference compartment of the Kelardasht region.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted in the reference compartment of Series 1 of the Langa Forest Management Plan, located in Watershed No. 36 (Kazemrud). Developmental stages were identified in the reference compartment based on Korpel's definitions in 2008. One 1-ha sample plot (100 × 100 m) was established in each of the initial, optimal (peak), and disintegration (decay) developmental stages, with the plot sides oriented along the four cardinal directions. Tree species and diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured and recorded for all trees within each plot. Tree-related microhabitats were identified according to the European Union's Integrate+ classification guide, comprising eight broad forms (cavities, injuries and wounds, bark, deadwood, growth forms/deformations, epiphytes, nests, and other microhabitats) and 20 groups, including woodpecker cavities, trunk cavities, branch cavities, water-filled tree holes, insect galleries, bark loss, stem and crown breakage, cracks and wounds, bark tears, bark structures, dead branches, dendrotelms, branch aggregations, cankers, fruiting bodies of wood-decaying fungi, non-specific fungal structures, cryptogams, nests, sap flows, and dendromicrohabitats associated with fine debris.
Results: In the initial, optimal, and decay developmental stages, 40.6%, 6.2%, and 16.8% of trees, respectively, lacked any tree-related microhabitat. The highest number of microhabitats recorded on a single tree was 13 on a beech tree with a DBH of 98 cm in the initial stage, 9 on a maple tree with a DBH of 43 cm in the optimal stage, and 10 on a hornbeam tree with a DBH of 56 cm in the decay stage. Of the 20 microhabitat groups examined, nests were not observed in any developmental stage. Except for water-filled tree holes, all other microhabitat groups occurred at their highest frequencies, with only minor differences, in the optimal stage, and their patterns of variation across developmental stages were generally similar. Although moss cover followed a similar pattern across all three developmental stages, its frequency was higher in the initial stage. Moreover, except for water-filled tree holes, the highest frequencies of microhabitats were generally recorded, with slight differences, on medium-diameter trees in the optimal stage, medium-diameter trees in the decay stage, and large-diameter trees in the optimal stage. The highest numbers of water-filled tree holes were recorded in the initial stage, particularly among large-diameter (32), small-diameter (23), and very large-diameter (16) trees. Insect galleries and wood-borer cavities were most frequent among small-diameter trees in the decay stage (9), exceeding their frequency in the other developmental stages. On average, 16.03% of trees (43.9 trees) had cavities, 2.11% (5.5 trees) had injuries, 8.03% (22.3 trees) had bark-related microhabitats, 3.02% (8.7 trees) had dead branches and crown structures, 19.29% (52.7 trees) had stem deformations, 12.72% (33 trees) hosted epiphytes, and 2.24% (3.3 trees) had other types of microhabitats. The mean number of microhabitats was 2.1 per tree, while 18.6% of trees hosted five or more microhabitats.
Conclusion: The formation of tree-related microhabitats varies according to tree species, site conditions, tree diameter, and forest management regime. Although microhabitat abundance generally increases with increasing DBH, some microhabitat groups may occur at high frequencies on small-diameter trees. Therefore, biodiversity conservation should encompass trees across a broad range of size classes. Particular attention should be given to retaining large-diameter trees supporting more than five types of microhabitats, as well as small-diameter trees bearing unique microhabitats. In addition, trees with the potential to develop microhabitats in the future should be incorporated into conservation planning.

Background and Objective: Defoliating insects are among the major factors threatening the health and sustainability of forest ecosystems. Climate change and rising global temperatures have contributed to increased frequency and geographical expansion of these pests in Iranian forests. The oak leaf-roller moth (Tortrix viridana L.) is one of the most important pests of oak forests, causing extensive defoliation, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and tree weakening through feeding on the leaves of coppice oak trees. Controlling this pest in the inaccessible areas of the Zagros Mountains requires environmentally friendly approaches. In this regard, biological agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) can serve as suitable alternatives to chemical pesticides. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Bt spraying on the population density of the oak leaf-roller moth and to assess the potential of the NDVI vegetation index derived from Sentinel-2 imagery for monitoring pest-induced vegetation responses.
Material and Methods: This study was conducted over approximately 926 ha of oak forests in the Ghabrehosein area of Piranshahr County, northwestern Iran, which represents one of the major infestation hotspots of the oak leaf-roller moth. To control the pest, ground-based Bt spraying was carried out in May 2023 at a concentration of 1 kg per 100 L of water. The treatment effect was evaluated using a Before–After Control–Impact (BACI) design. In both control and treated areas, three 300-m sampling transects were established using a random-systematic approach, and 30 trees were selected along each transect at 30-m intervals. Larval density was assessed before spraying and one month after treatment. The effect of Bt on larval density was analyzed using a BACI linear mixed-effects model, with treatment, time, and their interaction considered as fixed effects and tree identity as a random effect. The percentage reduction in larval density was also calculated using the ΔDxt index. To evaluate vegetation responses, NDVI was derived from Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery during April–September 2023. Image processing and generation of NDVI time series at a 10-m spatial resolution were performed using the Google Earth Engine platform. The relationship between NDVI and larval density was evaluated using simple linear regression.
Results: The results showed that the mean larval density of T. viridana in the treated area decreased from 53.37 ± 15.74 larvae per tree before Bt application to 18.73 ± 7.26 larvae per tree after treatment. In contrast, only minor changes were observed in the control area, where mean larval density changed from 48.74 ± 12.25 to 47.03 ± 10.87 larvae per tree. The BACI linear mixed-effects model indicated a highly significant treatment × time interaction (p < 0.001), demonstrating the effectiveness of Bt application in reducing pest population density. Post-hoc comparisons confirmed a significant reduction in larval density in the treated area, whereas no significant change was observed in the control area. The ΔDxt index indicated that Bt spraying reduced larval density by approximately 65%, while changes in the control area remained within the range of natural population fluctuations. NDVI time-series analysis showed similar seasonal patterns in both areas; however, following treatment, NDVI values remained consistently higher in the treated area compared with the control. The smaller decline in NDVI in the treated area indicated better vegetation preservation and reduced feeding damage caused by larvae. Simple linear regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between NDVI and larval density in both areas before spraying. After treatment, this relationship became statistically non-significant in the treated area, indicating a reduced association between pest density and vegetation changes following Bt application.
Conclusion: The results demonstrated that biological spraying with Bt significantly reduced the population density of the oak leaf-roller moth, and based on the BACI design and linear mixed-effects model, this effect could be distinguished from natural pest population fluctuations in the control area. The reduction in larval feeding activity following Bt treatment was associated with the maintenance of higher NDVI values in the treated area, indicating reduced defoliation and improved vegetation condition. Furthermore, regression analysis showed that the relationship between NDVI and larval density became statistically insignificant after Bt application in the treated area, whereas it remained significant in the control area. Therefore, integrating field-based observations with NDVI derived from Sentinel-2 imagery can provide an effective approach for evaluating biological pest control and monitoring vegetation health at large spatial scales.

Background and Objective: Over the past two decades, the severity of drought and the frequency of dust storms have increased markedly in Iran, particularly in the western and southwestern provinces, imposing substantial pressure on natural ecosystems. The Zagros forests, one of the country's most valuable and vulnerable forest ecosystems, are highly susceptible to the combined impacts of drought and dust deposition. These environmental stressors reduce tree growth, disrupt physiological processes, and accelerate forest decline. Wild pistachio (Pistacia atlantica Desf.), an ecologically and economically important tree species of Iran's arid and semi-arid regions, plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem stability. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the combined effects of drought and dust stress on the antioxidant enzyme activities of wild pistachio seedlings in order to better understand their defense mechanisms and provide insights for improving their resilience to environmental stress.
Material and Methods: This study was conducted from March 2023 to December 2023 in the greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Lorestan University. A factorial experiment was arranged as a split-plot design within a randomized complete block design using 384 wild pistachio seedlings. Drought stress was applied at three irrigation levels corresponding to 100% (control), 75%, and 50% of field capacity, while dust stress consisted of four concentrations: 0, 350, 750, and 1,500 μg m⁻³. Growth chambers with transparent plastic covers were constructed inside the greenhouse, and the seedlings were placed within these chambers. The potting medium consisted of equal proportions of agricultural soil, sand, and farmyard manure, similar to the substrate commonly used in forest nurseries. At the end of the experiment, leaf samples were collected and the activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were determined under laboratory conditions.
Results: Drought and dust stresses significantly affected the activities of all antioxidant enzymes at the 1% probability level. However, the interaction between the two stressors was not significant for APX activity, indicating that each stress factor independently influenced this enzyme. Catalase activity increased markedly with increasing stress intensity. Under severe drought (50% of field capacity), APX and SOD activities showed a slight decline at the initial dust concentration (350 μg m⁻³), which may reflect temporary impairment of the antioxidant defense system under oxidative stress. With further increases in dust concentration to 750 and 1,500 μg m⁻³, SOD activity increased substantially, suggesting activation of compensatory defense mechanisms to counteract reactive oxygen species. Although POD activity was significantly influenced by both drought and dust stress, its response did not exhibit a consistent increasing or decreasing trend.
Conclusion: Wild pistachio seedlings responded to the combined effects of drought and dust stress by significantly enhancing the activities of CAT, POD, and SOD, demonstrating an effective antioxidant defense mechanism. The marked increase in SOD activity, as the first line of defense against reactive oxygen species, highlights its critical role in protecting cellular integrity and enhancing stress tolerance. Nevertheless, under severe drought and dust conditions, physiological performance and seedling growth were substantially impaired, increasing the likelihood of seedling mortality. Consequently, mitigating dust sources through wetland restoration, securing environmental water allocations, establishing stress-tolerant vegetation in dust-emitting areas, and strengthening regional cooperation for transboundary dust control and sustainable water resource management are recommended to reduce environmental stress and improve the resilience of Zagros forest ecosystems.

Background and Objective: Giyan Forest, the last remaining remnant of the western oak forests in Hamadan Province, is of high ecological and recreational value. The paving of its access road has significantly improved accessibility, leading to a substantial increase in visitor numbers and greater pressure on this forest ecosystem. While some stakeholders advocate strict protection of the forest, others support the development of tourism infrastructure to stimulate the local economy. Given the dependence of part of the local community's livelihood on the forest, neither complete closure nor unrestricted tourism is a viable management option. Therefore, this study evaluated the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) associated with the reconstruction of the forest road network and proposed appropriate strategies for the sustainable management of Giyan Forest.
Material and Methods: The current status of Giyan Forest and its future management strategies were assessed using SWOT analysis based on expert opinions. Initially, 35 open-ended questionnaires were distributed among experts from the Department of Natural Resources, Department of Environment, Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Office, Giyan Municipality, and researchers from the Hamadan Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the forest. Based on the collected responses, a second questionnaire was developed to evaluate the importance of each factor using a five-point Likert scale. A weighting coefficient ranging from 0 to 1 was assigned to each factor according to its relative importance. Internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external (opportunities and threats) factors were analyzed using the Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) and External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrices. The weighted score of each factor was calculated by multiplying its weight by its rating. Finally, the mean, minimum, and maximum scores of each factor across the participating organizations were calculated, and the most appropriate management strategy for each organization, as well as the overall strategy for the future management of Giyan Forest, was determined.
Results: The highest mean score among the internal strengths was assigned to forest monitoring and inspection by field officers (3.94), whereas improved access for researchers received the lowest score (3.17). Among the internal weaknesses, inappropriate road density obtained the highest mean score (3.75), while poor road safety received the lowest (2.72). Regarding external opportunities, integrated management and community empowerment achieved the highest mean score (4.17), whereas the development of cycling and walking trails received the lowest score (3.00). For external threats, the loss of genetic resources ranked highest (4.28), while construction of tourism facilities ranked lowest (3.33). Overall, the most important strength was the improvement of forest-related services, including support for silvicultural operations, management of water rights, improved access for supplementary irrigation, and rapid access to fire-affected areas. The major weaknesses were inadequate road safety standards and the use of unsuitable construction materials. The highest-ranked opportunity was the establishment of an integrated management system for the region's economic, natural, cultural, and historical resources through a joint council representing the relevant organizations. Increased management costs were identified as the most significant external threat.
Conclusion: Forest-related services were identified as the principal strength of the reconstructed forest road network, whereas inadequate safety standards and unsuitable road construction materials were the main weaknesses. Establishing an integrated management system through a representative council of relevant organizations was recognized as the most promising opportunity for balancing environmental conservation, tourism development, and local livelihoods. Rising management costs represented the most significant external threat. Furthermore, the assessment of external threat factors indicated that increased management costs represented the most significant threat factor.

Background and Objective: Litter decomposition is one of the most fundamental ecological processes regulating nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and carbon dynamics in forest ecosystems. By facilitating nutrient return and organic matter formation, this process plays a critical role in maintaining soil quality. The rate of litter decomposition depends on litter quality, environmental conditions, and the activity of soil microorganisms. Despite its ecological significance, few studies have simultaneously compared the decomposition of broadleaf and coniferous tree litter across different land-use types, particularly in the Zagros forests of Iran. Therefore, this study aimed to compare litter quality and decomposition characteristics of selected broadleaf and coniferous tree species under forest, orchard, and agricultural land uses and to evaluate the effects of land-use change on litter decomposition.
Material and Methods: This study was conducted in 2020 in Ilam Province, western Iran. Three land-use types were selected, including natural forest within the Manesht and Ghalarang Protected Area, orchards, and agricultural lands located north of Ilam City. Three broadleaf species—Persian oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.), wild pistachio (Pistacia atlantica Desf.), and hawthorn (Crataegus pontica C. Koch)—and two coniferous species—Turkish pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) and Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.)—were investigated. Freshly fallen litter was collected from natural forests and placed in litterbags (20 × 20 cm, 2-mm mesh size), which were installed at the soil surface (0–10 cm depth). A total of 180 litterbags were prepared. Litterbags were retrieved after 60, 120, 180, and 240 days, and litter quality indices were determined. The evaluated indices included litter decomposition rate, asymptotic decomposition limit, maximum organic matter loss estimated using gravimetric relationships, and potential humification capacity. Data were analyzed as a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with three replications using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and treatment means were compared using Duncan's multiple range test at the 1% significance level.
Results: The results demonstrated that sampling time, tree species, and land-use type significantly affected litter decomposition quality indices. After 240 days, the highest percentage of organic matter loss in orchards was observed for wild pistachio litter (36.2%), whereas Mediterranean cypress exhibited the lowest value (18.2%). In agricultural land, the highest and lowest values were likewise recorded for wild pistachio (31.0%) and Mediterranean cypress (17.4%), respectively. In forest stands, wild pistachio showed the highest organic matter loss (29.3%), while Mediterranean cypress again exhibited the lowest (16.5%). Litter decomposition rates were consistently higher for wild pistachio and Persian oak than for the other species across all land-use types. The highest asymptotic decomposition limit in orchards and agricultural lands was recorded for hawthorn and wild pistachio litter, whereas in forest stands Persian oak exhibited the highest value (65%), likely reflecting its adaptation to its native habitat in the Zagros forests. After 240 days, the asymptotic decomposition rate ranged from 15.4% day⁻¹ for wild pistachio to 12.6% day⁻¹ for Mediterranean cypress. Potential humification capacity was highest for wild pistachio and Mediterranean cypress across all land-use types, whereas the lowest value in forests was observed for Persian oak (0.35). Overall, litter decomposition patterns were broadly similar among land-use types, probably because the present orchard and agricultural lands had originally been forested before land-use conversion.
Conclusion: Organic matter loss was greatest in the litter of Persian oak (29.8%) and wild pistachio (36.2%) across the forest, orchard, and agricultural land uses. The results further indicated that organic matter loss increased progressively over time. In forest ecosystems, Persian oak litter exhibited the greatest decomposition potential among the studied species. These findings suggest that Persian oak and wild pistachio play a more prominent role than the other investigated species in enhancing soil fertility and promoting nutrient cycling in Zagros forest ecosystems. Notably, their beneficial effects remained evident even after forest conversion to orchards and croplands. Therefore, for forest restoration and afforestation programs in the Zagros region, wild pistachio should be prioritized as a companion species alongside Persian oak. Given the superior decomposition performance of native broadleaf species, the introduction of coniferous species into these ecosystems should be minimized whenever possible.

Background and Objective: Most forest roads in Golestan Province are unpaved or gravel-surfaced and generate considerable amounts of dust during the dry season, particularly in summer, due to vehicle traffic and wind action. Besides reducing driver visibility and traffic safety, dust emissions contribute to environmental pollution, diminish the recreational value of forest areas, and accelerate surface deterioration of forest roads. Therefore, identifying sustainable dust control measures is essential. One practical approach in arid and semi-arid regions is the application of gravel mulch, which increases surface roughness, reduces near-surface wind velocity, and traps fine particles. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of gravel type and surface cover percentage on dust suppression along the Arab-Dagh forest roads in eastern Golestan Province.
Material and Methods: A portable wind tunnel was used to simulate wind-induced soil erosion and dust emission under field conditions. The tunnel had a contact area of 60 × 38 cm, and road sections with similar geometric characteristics (slope, curvature, and width) were randomly selected. Three gravel types, including small cobbles (>3 cm), almond-shaped gravel (1.5–3 cm), and fine gravel (<1.5 cm), were applied at four surface cover levels (0, 25, 50, and 75%). After application, the treated surfaces were compacted using a manual cylindrical roller to ensure initial stability. Experiments were conducted at wind velocities of 2 and 4 m s⁻¹, representing typical airflow generated by moving vehicles. Each treatment was replicated three times, resulting in a total of 72 experimental units. Dust collected in the silicone chamber at the end of the wind tunnel was weighed using a digital balance with a precision of 0.1 mg. Data were analyzed as a factorial experiment using the General Linear Model (GLM) in SPSS at the 99% confidence level.
Results: Gravel type, surface cover percentage, and wind velocity each had significant effects on dust production (P < 0.01). The interaction between gravel type and cover percentage was also significant, whereas the three-way interaction with wind velocity was not (P > 0.05). All gravel treatments significantly reduced dust emissions compared with the control, with small cobbles showing the greatest effectiveness. Mean dust production decreased from 15.17 g m⁻³ in the untreated control to 9.72, 11.09, and 11.87 g m⁻³ for small cobbles, almond-shaped gravel, and fine gravel, respectively. Increasing surface cover significantly enhanced dust suppression. At 75% coverage, small cobbles reduced dust emissions by 81% and 71% under wind speeds of 2 and 4 m s⁻¹, respectively. Under the same coverage, almond-shaped gravel reduced dust by 44% and 50%, while fine gravel achieved approximately 44% reduction at both wind speeds. The lowest dust suppression occurred at 25% surface cover. Increasing wind velocity from 2 to 4 m s⁻¹ significantly increased dust emissions. The results further demonstrated that gravel size and particle shape play a key role in improving soil surface stability. Small cobbles increased surface roughness, reduced near-bed airflow velocity, filled surface voids, and effectively trapped suspended particles, thereby providing the highest dust control efficiency.
Conclusion: Depending on particle size and surface coverage, gravel mulch can substantially reduce wind erosion and dust emissions from forest roads. Given the availability of suitable rock borrow sources in eastern Golestan Province, applying small cobbles at approximately 75% surface coverage is recommended as an economical, durable, and environmentally friendly method for controlling dust along the Arab-Dagh forest road network. Further studies are recommended to evaluate the long-term durability and seasonal performance of gravel mulch under natural rainfall and field conditions.

Background and Objective: Tortrix viridana L., the European oak leaf roller, is one of the most destructive pests of oak forests, causing reduced photosynthesis, suppressed growth, premature defoliation, and ultimately tree decline by feeding on buds and young leaves. Owing to the limitations associated with chemical insecticides, biological control agents and botanical insecticides have gained increasing attention as sustainable components of integrated pest management (IPM). The entomopathogenic fungus Lecanicillium lecanii infects insects through direct penetration of the cuticle, proliferates within the hemocoel, and causes host mortality while also suppressing feeding and reproduction. Likewise, Beno2, a botanical insecticide derived from the root extract of Sophora flavescens, contains alkaloids such as matrine that exhibit insecticidal and antifeedant activities with lower environmental risks than conventional insecticides. Therefore, combining these two control agents may enhance pest suppression through synergistic interactions while reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.
Material and Methods: This laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the compatibility of L. lecanii isolate 229 with the botanical insecticide Beno2 and to investigate their lethal and sublethal effects against larvae of the oak leaf roller (T. viridana). Egg masses were collected from the Pirdanan forests of Piranshahr, and third- and fourth-instar larvae were reared under controlled laboratory conditions. Fungal bioassays were performed using conidial suspensions ranging from 10⁴ to 10⁸ conidia mL⁻¹, and larval mortality was recorded nine days after treatment. Similarly, Beno2 bioassays were conducted using a range of concentrations based on the recommended field dose, with mortality assessed 24 and 48 h after application. Fungal compatibility with Beno2 was evaluated by measuring conidial germination on media containing half, the recommended, and twice the recommended dose of the insecticide. Sublethal effects were assessed using LC₂₅ of each agent individually and a combined treatment of LC₁₂.₅ + LC₁₂.₅. Life-table parameters, including survival, developmental duration, adult longevity, fecundity, intrinsic rate of increase (r), net reproductive rate (R₀), mean generation time (T), and finite rate of increase (λ), were estimated using the age-stage, two-sex life table approach.
Results: Bioassay results demonstrated that larval mortality was concentration-dependent for both control agents. The LC₅₀ values of L. lecanii isolate 229 were estimated at 2.01 × 10⁵ and 7.78 × 10⁵ conidia mL⁻¹ for third- and fourth-instar larvae, respectively. The 48-h LC₅₀ values of Beno2 were 275.50 and 308.09 μL L⁻¹ for the respective larval instars. Compatibility assays showed that half of the recommended Beno2 dose had no significant inhibitory effect on conidial germination, with germination exceeding 92%, whereas the recommended dose reduced germination and twice the recommended dose completely inhibited it. Sublethal treatments, including fungal LC₂₅, Beno2 LC₂₅, and the combined LC₁₂.₅ + LC₁₂.₅ treatment, significantly affected the biological performance of the pest. All treatments prolonged the immature developmental period and shortened adult longevity. Reproductive performance and population growth parameters were also significantly reduced. The greatest reductions in the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and net reproductive rate (R₀) were observed in the combined treatment, indicating a synergistic interaction between L. lecanii and Beno2 in suppressing pest survival and population growth. Moreover, the significant increase in mean generation time (T) suggests a slower rate of population development in subsequent generations.
Conclusion: Overall, the results demonstrated that both L. lecanii and the botanical insecticide Beno2 are effective against the oak leaf roller (T. viridana), and their combined application at appropriate concentrations can enhance efficacy while reducing the need for higher application rates. Because the sublethal combination treatment substantially suppressed population growth and reproductive potential, this strategy represents a promising environmentally friendly option for the integrated management of oak leaf roller populations. Further field studies are recommended to evaluate the long-term effectiveness and stability of this approach under natural forest conditions.
