Drought stress is one of the most important environmental factors limiting the growth of woody and non-woody plants. In arid and semi-arid areas, the establishment and growth of young seedlings are completely affected by the lack of water. To investigate the effect of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) inoculation on the absorption of nutrients as well as the activity of antioxidant enzymes of Paulownia fortunei species under drought stress a factorial experiment was conducted on the basis of a completely randomized design with three replications and two factors including drought stress (at four levels: 80, 60, 40 and 100% of field capacity) and VAM inoculation (at two levels: with and without VAM). Some antioxidant properties such as soluble protein, catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase enzymes, as well as some nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, zinc, iron, and manganese, were measured. The results showed that drought stress caused a significant increase in the amount of soluble protein, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activity. The highest amount of activity related to the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase was observed in moderate and severe drought stress for mycorrhizal seedlings. Drought stress also led to a decrease in all measured nutrients, while inoculation with mycorrhiza increased nutrient absorption at all drought stress levels except for nitrogen. In general, it was concluded that the use of mycorrhiza in Paulownia fortunei seedlings has an effective role in absorbing nutrients and increasing the activity of resisting enzymes against drought stress.
