Abstract

The present study aims to do a qualitative and quantitative comparison of mature forest stands and regeneration at two treated (after 14 years of improvement cutting) and untreated stand (adjacent to the modified stands) in the Makidi area of Kaleybar County. Overal, 69 circular sample plots with the dimensions of 300 m2 for stand characteristics and 100 m2 for tree regeneration were established. The results of the study indicated that the average diameter of the trees at breast height (11.3 cm) and average diameter of their crown (2.4 m) in the treated area are significantly higher than in the control area and there is no significant difference in the two areas in terms of the trees’ height. Regarding qualitative characteristics, it was determined that the percentage of the mixture in improvement cut stand for Quercus macrantera and Acer compester was 31% and 1.4 % higher than in control stand, respectively. Moreover, the two areas are significantly different in terms of crown health and trees’ trunk angle and the percent of trees with healthy crown (93.5%) and upright trunk angle (68.7%) is more in the treated area. Generally, it seems the qualitative and quantitative status of the Improvement cut stand were better than in the control stand.
